If the following words of the Lord Jesus are true:
John 14:23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”
Then is it possible to justify the existence of Christian Denominations?
Some describe them as Faith Communities. Groups of People who live out their faith in God in their own way.
For Me, this raises a problem regarding truth!
In John 14:23 we see the Lord Jesus Christ describing his Followers as a single group of people who have Him and his Father making their home with them. A group of people who are members of God’s Family. Who have been born again of the Spirit of God. Who are only included in the Body of Christ because they obey His teachings.
However, do we see this with people who are members of a Christian Denomination?
Or do we see them acting out their own versions of a Christian Religion?
Faith Groups that are formed by Humans, not by the Holy Spirit of God.
Can any Christian Religious Group that allows disobedience to the teachings of the Lord Jesus be right with God?
Lets us look at one simple command given by the Lord Jesus to his Followers:
John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Is it possible for any Christian Religious Group to prove to everyone that they are his disciples if they don’t love one another as he loves them?
As I see it, there is a move by some Christians to unite the Christian Denominations or Faith Groups. However, in doing so, they seem to remove the need to obey the Lord’s teachings.
In other words, they are trying to unite groups of people who hate the Lord Jesus.
John 14:24 Jesus said, “Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”
Clearly, if they do not obey his teaching, then they do not love him. If they do not love him, then they must hate him.
Even if they love him a little bit but have not got it right, they are still in trouble. This is a message sent by the Lord Jesus to a certain group of believers:
To the church in Laodicea
14 ‘To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, “I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.” But you do not realise that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so that you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so that you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so that you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
Strong words to a ‘Lukewarm’ group of his followers! The key words that I believe are relevant for today are:
19 ‘Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.’
Here we have the promise in John 14:23 repeated. ‘I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.’
To be right with God you have to be right with Jesus! And to be right with Jesus, you have to be living in fellowship with HIM!
Can Christian Denominations or Faith Groups honestly claim to be living in fellowship with HIM?
Well, if they think or know they are, then let them prove it to us who think they are not.
Why is it important that any member of these Groups need to understand and put into practice His teaching on this subject of ‘living with him’?
Here is what the Lord says:
21 ‘To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
It’s about hearing the Holy Spirit of God given through the Lords chosen messengers.
My prayer is that the Christians of today will clearly hear what the Spirit is saying to them. Their salvation is at stake.
