Every Lost Soul is on trial, even if they don’t know it.
Getting a fair trial.
When a prisoner goes on trial, assuming it’s a fair trial, they are left in no doubt as to the charges they face. In this world, justice is hard to achieve and many fail to obtain it. Those who are there to dispense justice have a difficult job in finding the truth. As a Solicitor once said, to go into Court thinking that the truth will save you can be naive thinking. As a Barrister once said when asked why he defends Criminals. It is not the case that all the prosecution witnesses, including the police, are going to tell the truth. Then of course we have the Dodgy Jurors!
However, with the Lord Jesus, a fair trial is assured, even if you don’t believe it.
Now if you have been convicted of your guilt and your conscience is keeping you awake. As is the problem with Lost Souls – unless they have deadened their conscience which many do. Then the truth that you need to be saved from hell is easier to understand.
Now you are ready to learn about the atonement as a revealed fact, and convince you to see that Jesus Christ is your offering. That God has accepted the death of Jesus Christ as a substitute for your death, and that this is to be received upon the testimony of God. By that I mean the Holy Spirit of God proves to all who know you and who come to know you that you are indeed saved, born again, and thus have become a Child of God.
To be saved and then to seek to help others to be saved, this recognition of the sin that makes them a Lost Soul is very important.
The Lost Soul being already crushed into contrition by the convicting power of the moral law, the revelation of the love of God manifested in the death of Christ, will naturally beget great self- loathing, and that godly sorrow that needs not to be repented of. Under this showing the sinner can never forgive himself. God is holy and glorious; and he a sinner, saved by sovereign grace. This teaching may be more or less formal because lost souls may be more or less thoughtful, intelligent, and careful to understand. Some may understand sooner than others, some whom may never learn as their selfishness is too strong and they stay cloaked in their religion.
It was not by accident that the dispensation of law preceded the dispensation of grace; but it is in the natural order of things, in accordance with established mental laws, and evermore the law must prepare the way for the Gospel. To overlook this in instructing souls is almost certain to result in false hope, the introduction of a false standard of Christian experience, and to fill the church with spurious converts. Time will make this plain.
Now we all must clearly understand, in our minds and in our hearts, the ATONEMENT as a revealed fact, that God has supplied the provision to forgive all your sin upon you meeting the necessary condition (repentance and faith) that enables you to be reconciled with God your creator. You must be convinced that Christ has paid your penalty for you as your own sin offering. He was sacrificed for you in PROPITIATION – to meet the righteous demands of a broken moral law, making it possible for God, as moral governor, to forgive; to appease (Romans 3:26 “he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.”).
A good way of understanding it is to imagine your are in the dock during your trial. The sentence is Guilty and you will be executed (going to hell). You start to feel the shame of your crimes (sins) and also the dread of what you are facing for eternity. When all of a sudden a person related to the Judge who is sentencing you intervenes and says that they will take your punishment for you. Simply because you are their personal friend and loving companion. The Judge then accepts that and you are allowed to go free as the punishment for your crimes has been paid by another.
That is what the Lord Jesus can do! However, it is all in vain if the Lost Soul remains his enemy. To be a Christian is not enough! You have to be his adopted brother and act accordingly as befits the fact that He, Jesus, is not only your saviour, but also your Lord.
Many Lost Souls fail to do this. They fail to love and obey their supposed Lord. Instead they pursue a worthless religion and though claiming to be saved, they never are saved. For they do not have the Holy Spirit of God to prove that they have been reconciled to God through the sacrifice of his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
