Who are Soldiers of Christ and what do they do? Also as my podcast which is an overview of this Blog
The Soldiers real enemy is the Devil and it is against him that we stand and fight. It’s a battle between the Devil who is the Father of all Liars and the Lord Jesus Christ who is the source of all truth and allows people who love him and obey his teachings to become children of God.
Audio Soldiers of Christ Arise
Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armour on,
Strong in the strength which God supplies through His eternal Son.
Strong in the Lord of hosts, and in His mighty power,
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror.
Stand then in His great might, with all His strength endued,
But take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God;
That, having all things done, and all your conflicts passed,
Ye may o’ercome through Christ alone and stand entire at last.
Stand then against your foes, in close and firm array;
Legions of wily fiends oppose throughout the evil day.
But meet the sons of night, and mock their vain design,
Armed in the arms of heavenly light, of righteousness divine.
Leave no unguarded place, no weakness of the soul,
Take every virtue, every grace, and fortify the whole;
Indissolubly joined, to battle all proceed;
But arm yourselves with all the mind that was in Christ, your Head.
But, above all, lay hold on faith’s victorious shield;
Armed with that adamant and gold, be sure to win the field:
If faith surround your heart, Satan shall be subdued,
Repelled his every fiery dart, and quenched with Jesu’s blood.
Jesus hath died for you! What can His love withstand?
Believe, hold fast your shield, and who shall pluck you from His hand?
Believe that Jesus reigns; all power to Him is giv’n:
Believe, till freed from sin’s remains; believe yourselves to Heav’n.
To keep your armour bright, attend with constant care,
Still walking in your Captain’s sight, and watching unto prayer.
Ready for all alarms, steadfastly set your face,
And always exercise your arms, and use your every grace.
Pray without ceasing, pray, your Captain gives the word;
His summons cheerfully obey and call upon the Lord;
To God your every want in instant prayer display,
Pray always; pray and never faint; pray, without ceasing, pray!
In fellowship alone, to God with faith draw near;
Approach His courts, besiege His throne with all the powers of prayer:
Go to His temple, go, nor from His altar move;
Let every house His worship know, and every heart His love.
To God your spirits dart, your souls in words declare,
Or groan, to Him Who reads the heart, the unutterable prayer:
His mercy now implore, and now show forth His praise,
In shouts, or silent awe, adore His miracles of grace.
Pour out your souls to God, and bow them with your knees,
And spread your hearts and hands abroad, and pray for Zion’s peace;
Your guides and brethren bear for ever on your mind;
Extend the arms of mighty prayer, in grasping all mankind.
From strength to strength go on, wrestle and fight and pray,
Tread all the powers of darkness down and win the well fought day.
Still let the Spirit cry in all His soldiers, “Come!”
Charles Wesley wrote “Soldiers of Christ, Arise” in 1747, originally calling it “The Whole Armour of God, Ephesians VI.” With its bold and stirring message, the hymn was designed to confirm new believers.
At the time, Charles and his brother, John Wesley, had become leaders of the movement known as Methodism. The Church of England did not approve of the Methodists, however, and those associated with Methodism were persecuted. Their houses were vandalized. And even worse, Methodists were sometimes threatened, stoned, mauled, and dragged through the streets. Christians doing the work of the Devil as some still do today.
Given the threatening environment that most Methodists faced, Wesley no doubt thought of very real battles as he wrote “Soldiers of Christ, Arise.” Yet the hymn refers to more than just physical warfare: Its more important theme refers to the spiritual warfare that all Children of God face. As followers of Christ, we must put on the full armour of God, described in Ephesians 6:10–11, and always be ready to battle Satan’s forces. Whoever they may be, even members of your own family.
Calling on true Disciples of the Lord Jesus to fight these spiritual battles, the original version of “Soldiers of Christ, Arise” appeared in the 1749 publication Hymns and Sacred Poems. The lengthy hymn contained sixteen verses, each with eight lines.
Soldiers — the word conjures up images of men in battle, trained to fight, armed with deadly weapons. But it hardly describes most contemporary Christians, does it? Rather than battling our culture’s distorted values, many of us have been lulled into a passive faith fed by liars who want to stop us being saved.
And it’s no wonder we’re afraid to fight. Amid all the “political correctness” of our day, we’re pressured to keep our beliefs to ourselves, lest we offend someone else. And when we do take a stand for our faith, we’re often branded as “judgmental” and “intolerant.”
All in all, it’s easier to just focus on non-controversial topics like “love” and “forgiveness” rather than confronting Satan’s lies. Yet the above hymn reminds us that such behaviour isn’t befitting a soldier of Christ. Yes, we must celebrate Christian love and grace, but we must also “arise and put [our] armour on” and “tread all the powers of darkness down.”
This battle makes us uncomfortable and scared. Yet the stakes are too high for us to run away. Satan’s forces have filled the world with injustice and lies. Unless we battle them, our communities, our neighbours, and our own lives will grow ever more painful and dark.
So continue, as led by the Holy Spirit, not your own self-will, to “fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Tim. 6:12). Challenge someone with the truth when they discuss ungodly beliefs. Write to an elected official about injustices that need remedy. Plan to eliminate a sinful habit from your life.
These fights won’t come easy of course and you will often fail as all soldiers do. But don’t lose heart. When we fight for God, we’re always on the stronger side. Bear in mind what the Lord Jesus promises you, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.’ You do not stand alone and also have Guardian Angels (Jesus promised in Matthew 18:10 ‘See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.’).
You will only suffer what your Heavenly Father allows. You are sharing in Christ’s sufferings, so rejoice and be glad for great is your reward in heaven. Thank God that you are one of the save and pray for the salvation of your enemies – the enemies of Christ Jesus your powerful Lord and Saviour.
Why do I call the saved, Disciples, and not Christians? Well, clearly not all Christians are true lovers of the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, using the title Christian can give the impression to many that all Christians are saved.
This is not my teaching, but the teaching of the Lord Himself. John 14:23 Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.’
The key is ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching’. The Children of the Devil do not do that, no matter if they call themselves Christian. I am not saying all Christians are the Children of the Devil, only those who do not obey the teachings of the Lord Jesus ’24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching.’ Thus they do not have the Holy Spirit of God who proves who the obedient and the disobedient are.
You have just been reading how Christians in the Church of England persecuted the new Methodist Christians. Persecuting anybody is not a part of the Lords teaching. We are to love our enemies and do good to those who persecute us.
The Soldiers of Christ’s real enemy is the Devil and it is against him and his evil schemes that we stand and fight. The truth verses the lies! As Paul taught us in Ephesians 6:12 ‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’
There are two Groups of People:
1. Children of the Devil. They fear, hate, exterminate and control. They are also under the power of the Devil.
2. Children of God. They fear, love, educate and serve. They are also under the power of the Holy Spirit of God.
Members can swap the group they are in. Children of the Devil can start to love the Lord Jesus by learning his teachings and commands and obey them. Children of God can stop loving the Lord Jesus by stop learning and obeying his teachings and commands.
The Children of God, those who truly love and obey their Lord Jesus Christ, always win. Though in this life they can seem to be losers because they choose to be persecuted because they seek to reach the hearts and minds of their persecutors. Though it is only their human body that is harmed, their souls are
safe and will spend eternity with God in Heaven. While those who do the persecuting while rejecting the help of the Children of God will find their souls destroyed in Hell. This is what the Lord Jesus teaches.
The Children of God are given the armour of God as described in Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
Then the Devil and all Evil Spirits will know whose side you are on – The Lord’s side. The only weapons that the Children of the Devil have are lies and deceit. Jesus says that the Devil is the Father of all liars.
The Apostle Paul, and early Disciple of the Lord, was a true Child of God.
This a lovely description of how the Holy Spirit of God empowered him to defeat the Devil and how those who were not Soldiers for Christ failed.
Acts 19:11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to those who were ill, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, ‘In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.’ 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?’ 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honour.
The Lord Jesus Christ is truly worthy of being held in high honour! Praise his holy name and love him by obeying him thus becoming saved from the Devil.
Until Jesus Christ the Lord descends in person from high, instead of just being here in Spirit, and takes the living soldiers home, the Spiritual Battle will continue here on Earth. It’s better than any Sci-Fi story made into film.
Dear Reader, it is a worthy fight and the rewards that await the Soldiers of Christ are eternal.
