John 14:23 Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.’
Throughout Christian Church History there have been new Movements formed by people who wanted something different with their Church Life.
The problem, as I see it, is with the concept of CHURCH. The true CHURCH is the Spiritual Body of Christ. You are either a member of it or you are not. In John 14:23 he describes CHURCH membership. In verse 24 he describes those who form their own Church membership – Christless Christians.
So, what is the TRUE Christian Church?
It is Christ’s Spiritual Body!
The Body of Christ is made up of Spiritually converted people all living and moving while spiritually connected to one another under the Headship of the Lord Jesus Christ.
What is the TRUE Christian Church? It is Christ’s Spiritual Body!
A People who are joined together as one, but operating with a variety of Gifts and Roles while under the Leadership of the Lord Jesus. John 14:23 Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.’
It is not people who are spiritually unconverted and uniting in their own particular versions of Christianity. These people the Lord Jesus described in John 14:24 ‘Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.’
So you can be a very active, knowledgeable, and dedicated church going Christian. BUT not be spiritually connected to God.
How does this Spiritual Body of Christ operate?
1 Corinthians 12 New International Version – UK (NIVUK)
Concerning spiritual gifts
12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to dumb idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus be cursed,’ and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, [Or languages; also in verse 28] and to still another the interpretation of tongues. [Or languages; also in verse 28] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
Unity and diversity in the body
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptised by [Or with; or in] one Spirit so as to form one body – whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 And so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15 Now if the foot should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’ 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honourable we treat with special honour. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honour to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues [Or other languages]? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.
Love is indispensable
And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
Ephesians 4 New International Version – UK (NIVUK)
Unity and maturity in the body of Christ
4 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it [Or God] says:
‘When he ascended on high,
he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.’ [Psalm 68:18]
9 (What does ‘he ascended’ mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions [Or the depths of the earth]? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Instructions for Christian living
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body. 26 ‘In your anger do not sin’ [Psalm 4:4 (see Septuagint)]: do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Professing Christians who are described by the Lord Jesus in John 14:24 ‘Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching.’ refuse to live this way. Thus they have to operate their Christianity in a Human or Worldly way. This is clearly seen today and throughout Church History.
How to recognise a true Disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ and one who is false?
One BIG mistake in Bible Teaching
It is pointless teaching Bible Passages aimed at Believers, those spiritually born again of the Spirit of God, to professing Christians who are unconverted. Are even Impenitent Sinners [not feeling shame or regret about one’s actions or attitudes.]
The LAW of the New Testament is obedience to Christ as a result of your love for Him
To be chosen for Salvation, you have to be as the Lord Jesus describes in John 14:23!
Those whom the Lord will refuse entry into Heaven and send into Hell are described in John 14:24!
There is no religion, not even Christian, that can do what the Lord Jesus proclaimed He can do.
Revelation 1:18 ‘I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.’
